In the eastern city of Gera, a man poured flammable liquid on a 46-year-old woman and set her ablaze, inflicting life-threatening injuries. The attacker, who may have been her husband, was able to flee, according to police.

 After a man on Sunday morning doused a woman in a tram with a combustible liquid and set it ablaze, inflicting life-threatening injuries, German police in the eastern city of Gera are looking into a case of attempted murder. Police in the state of Thuringia, where Gera is situated, say the attacker is believed to be the 46-year-old husband of the woman. 

 The 46-year-old woman was taken to a hospital by helicopter, according to a police spokeswoman, following the attack, whose motivation is still unknown. She stated that an investigation was ongoing. The attack, which took place around 10 a.m. local time (0900 UTC), did not result in any other injuries.

Police and firefighters rushed to the scene.


What else do we know about the Gera attack?

 Other passengers in the tram pressed the emergency stop button after the attack, something the suspect exploited to make his escape, according to the spokeswoman.

 She said that the vehicle's driver acted quickly and started using a fire extinguisher to put out the fire. The spokeswoman stated that the woman was treated at the scene before being flown to the hospital. She said the other passengers and the driver were offered psychological care.

 Gera is situated in the east of eastern German state of Thuringia, some 60 km (37 miles) south of Leipzig.
