No-one will win a trade war', says China after Trump vows to hike tariffs on day one in office

  • Donald Trump says he will introduce 25% tariffs on goods coming from Canada and Mexico on day one of his presidency

  • He also says he'll add an extra 10% on goods coming from China - imports from there to the US are already subject to some tariffs

  • For context: A tariff is a tax paid on goods as they enter a country. The company importing the goods pays the tax, not the foreign company that exports them

  • Trump says the tariffs are in response to "crime and drugs" coming across the southern and northern borders of the US

  • China calls it "irresponsible" and warns that no-one will win a trade war, our correspondent Laura Bicker writes

  • Doug Ford - leader of Canada's most populous province, Ontario - says a 25% tariff would be "devastating to workers and jobs" while the head of Mexico's Senate says the US needs to stop consuming drugs
